Explore the tranquility and beauty of Westmalle Trappist Abbey

In Westmalle Abbey, officially known as the Abbey of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Westmalle, monks of the Cistercian order, also known as Trappists, have dedicated themselves to communal prayer and labour for over 200 years. Collaborating with outsiders, they craft the world-renowned Westmalle Trappist beers: Westmalle Dubbel and Westmalle Tripel.

The Iconic Trappist Beers of Westmalle Brewery

People often hail Westmalle Tripel as the “mother of all tripels”. This golden beer, with an alcohol content of 9.5%, is a true style icon. Its fruity notes, subtle hop bitterness, and creamy taste create a delightful experience for the palate. Westmalle Dubbel, a dark, reddish-brown Trappist beer with 7% alcohol, features a full, creamy-coloured head. The rich and complex taste offers fruity aromas and hints of roasted malt. According to experts, both beers rank among the best in the world. Westmalle Extra, the brothers’ blond table beer, has been available in beer shops and hospitality establishments since 2021.

Take a breathtaking stroll around Westmalle Abbey

Westmalle Abbey is a 45-minute walk or a 10-minute bike ride from B&B De Kasteelhoeve. Since the monks prioritize peace and optimal working conditions, the Westmalle Trappist Brewery, which lies inside the abbey walls, does not allow visitors. However, you can enjoy a scenic abbey walk around the premises, with various stops providing insights into life at the abbey. The monks’ prayer moments are open to everyone, and you can find the schedule of all liturgical celebrations on the Trappist Abbey Westmalle website.

Purchase Trappist cheese at the gate of Westmalle Abbey

If you’re a fan of Trappist cheese, you’re in luck at Westmalle Abbey. The monks sell a limited quantity of their artisanal cheese at the abbey gate. This is also an opportune moment to glimpse inside the abbey 😉. Worth noting: In our brasserie, you can taste beers from Westmalle Abbey and savour Trappist cheese. In our B&B, you can also find souvenirs and beers from Westmalle Abbey.
